Elders, Deacons & the Mission of the Church | Shepherded by Design Wk02

In this message, Pastor Rodney continues the conversation about biblical church leadership by looking at Acts 6 and the important role of shared responsibility in the church. As the early church experienced incredible growth, that growth exposed a weakness: some of the Hellenistic Jewish widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. Rather than ignoring the problem or asking the apostles to simply add another responsibility to their already-full ministry, the church responded by identifying spiritually qualified people who could faithfully meet the need.

Through Acts 6, we see an important principle for the church today: a legitimate need does not automatically determine who should carry it. God has entrusted different responsibilities to different people within the body of Christ, and healthy church leadership brings clarity to those responsibilities so that people are cared for, God’s Word remains central, and the mission of Jesus continues moving forward.

Pastor Rodney also explores the biblical distinction between elders and deacons. Elders and overseers are entrusted with shepherding, teaching, and spiritual oversight, while deacons are spiritually qualified servants entrusted with meaningful ministry and care within the church. These roles are different, but that does not make one more valuable than the other. The church needs the Word faithfully taught, the flock faithfully shepherded, and people faithfully served.

Acts 6 also reminds us that practical ministry is deeply spiritual ministry. Caring for widows, handling resources wisely, meeting needs, and rebuilding trust all require spiritual maturity, wisdom, and a heart shaped by Jesus. When responsibilities are clear and God's people faithfully carry what has been entrusted to them, the whole church is strengthened.

This message ultimately brings the conversation from church structure to a personal question for every follower of Jesus:

“Jesus, what have You entrusted to me in Your church?”

Instead of beginning with what pastors, elders, deacons, or someone else should be doing, we are challenged to examine our own lives. Where do you see a need? Who has God placed in your care? What gifts has He given you? What burden continues to get your attention? Where might Jesus be calling you to stop being a spectator and become a servant?

Jesus Himself gives us the model for every kind of Christian leadership and service. In Mark 10:45, He reminds us that even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. Elders must shepherd like Jesus. Deacons must serve like Jesus. Ministers must lead like Jesus. And every believer is called to follow Jesus by giving themselves for the good of His body.

When the church carries its responsibilities together, people are cared for, God's Word is proclaimed, servants are released into meaningful ministry, and the mission of Jesus moves forward.

So consider this question throughout the week:

What has Jesus entrusted to me, and am I carrying it faithfully?
