Church Hurt, Cultural Faith, and the Confession That Changes Everything

In this powerful kickoff to our new series “Reframe Church,” Pastor Rodney challenges us to examine the assumptions we’ve carried about church—many of which we’ve never even questioned .

We all live with assumptions. We assume hard work guarantees results. We assume busy equals productive. We assume our way is the right way. And in the Bible Belt, we often assume we understand church simply because we’ve always been around it . But what if our familiarity has kept us from fully understanding what Jesus actually meant when He said, “I will build my church”?

In this message, Pastor Rodney walks us through Matthew 16 at Caesarea Philippi—a place filled with idols, pagan worship, and what was known as the “gates of Hades.” It was there, in the middle of spiritual confusion and cultural noise, that Jesus asked the most important question: “Who do you say I am?”

Peter’s confession—“You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God”—was not inherited, cultural, or convenient. It was revealed truth. And Jesus declared that on that confession, He would build His Church—and the gates of hell would not overcome it .

This sermon addresses two common drifts that subtly shape how we approach church today:

• Cultural Christianity – Showing up without surrender.
• Church Hurt – Staying near but keeping your heart guarded.

Both can keep us close to church while far from true belonging in Christ .

Have you inherited faith without owning it?

Are you attending without surrendering?

Has hurt shaped your view of church more than Jesus has?

Have you personally confessed Christ as Lord?

Pastor Rodney reminds us that church is not a place you go—it’s a people you are. It’s not built on preference, personality, or programs, but on the revealed truth that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God .

If you have been near Jesus without truly knowing Him…
If you’ve been shaped more by culture or pain than by Christ…
If you’ve been attending without surrendering…

This message invites you to repentance, belief, reconciliation, and realignment.

Before we can step into the mission of Christ, we must first be reconciled to Christ.
